"Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California"

The Oakland Museum of California's "Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California" utilizes art and ephemera to explore local social forces and history in California art via four creative communities. They include Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in 1930s S.F. Sept. 20-April 12. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. $15, seniors/students $10, youth $6, 8 and under free. SF Open Studios

Meet artists, see their work and visit their studios in neighborhoods throughout the city during ArtSpan's 2014 SF Open Studios, the largest such program in the country. Participants choose from more than 900 artists, map out a self-guided tour and go. Preview: Oct. 11-12 at SOMArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan St., S.F. For her solo exhibition, "Persona," Swedish painter Halldin Maule creates stunningly realistic, figurative portraits of women that contain surrealist elements, butterflies and hints of bondage.
