Amberlee Rosolowich at the Hespe Gallery, June 17-July 26

San Francisco painter Amberlee Rosolowich expresses her sensitivity toward animals and her playful nature through a series of large-scale, oil on canvas works where children chill out with peacocks, hug lions and owls and romp with polar bears, giraffes and owls.

“Anthony Friedkin: The Gay Essay,” de Young Museum, June 14-January 11, 2015

Photographer Anthony Friedkin documented gay communities in San Francisco and Los Angeles between 1969 and 1973, which he entitled “The Gay Essay.” Featuring more than 75 vintage portraits that he shot in bars, dance halls, hotels and on the street, the exhibit also includes contact prints, documents and other materials from his archives.

Co-curated by the OMCA and students/faculty at San Diego State University, and the third in the series “What’s Happening California,” this installation includes superhero costumes, vintage comic books, Comic-Con memorabilia, student-produced videos and an interactive phone booth with costumes for visitors to try on, as a way of exploring the social and economic impact on the community by the San Diego Comic-Con, the longest-running and largest comics convention.
