Welcome the 2007 Chinese New Year by attending the New Tang Dynasty TV’s production of “Myth and Legends.” Performed for a limited engagement Jan. 5 through 7 at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, it celebrates the richness and beauty of ancient Chinese culture.

It takes theatergoers on an imaginative journey to an ethereal world, where exquisitely costumed performers include classical Chinese dancers performing graceful numbers, dragons coming magically to life and drummers and international vocalists enthralling audience members with their talents. It all happens on gorgeous sets and is part of a global tour.

“Myths and Legends” tells of the legends that helped form Chinese culture. An estimated 100,000 people will attend its performances in venues throughout the world and plans include a broadcast of excerpts from the show to more than 200 million television viewers throughout the Chinese New Year season.

The Chinese New Year holds an important place in Chinese society and signifies renewal. Its date is determined by the lunar calendar, which contains a 12-year cycle, and for millions of people across the globe it’s a joyful time of celebration.

“Myths and Legends” plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5 and Saturday, Jan. 6 and at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 7 at the War Memorial Opera House, 301 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco. Tickets cost $28 to $168.
